“Cyber-Archaeology Solutions to the Data Avalanche and World Cultural Heritage” by Thomas Levy, Professor, Anthropology; Associate Director, Calit2’s Center of Interdisciplinary Science for Art, Architecture and Archaeology (CISA3); Member, Calit2 Executive Council at UCSD Like precious natural resources, the world’s archaeological record is finite and in daily danger of destruction. Researchers at Calit2’s Center of Interdisciplinary Science for Art, Architecture and Archaeology (CISA3) are taking an interdisciplinary approach to develop Information Technology and engineering tools to help analyze archaeological data from ancient sites as well as share and preserve these rich cultural heritage datasets. Our test-bed is the copper ore rich Faynan district in Jordan where mining and metallurgy has taken place over a 10000 year period. Each year a UCSD team conducts fieldwork in this desert zone and brings an array of digital recording, imaging and analyses tools (DSLR photography, GPS, GIS, LiDAR, 3D scientific visualization, etc) to the field. The relative low-cost of these technologies means archaeologists around the world are utilizing digital recording tools at an accelerated pace. The result is an exponential growth in data — a data avalanche — that requires new analytical methods, cyber-infrastructure and web-based platforms to share data amongst researchers, conserve cultural heritage, and deliver it freely to the public.
