Like most private initiatives in international aid and development, WCR was founded by a family. In 2001 the Lodmell family established an Arizona based public charity with the mission to support education and alleviate the suffering of children through grant writing to reputable children’s charities in Africa, Latin America and Haiti. WCR also sponsored dozens of volunteer dental and medical missions. As the organization began to build field staff and manage programs, the focus became more defined as a service organization. It became clear our most effective interventions were when we gave a hand up, instead of a hand out. We evolved to strictly a service organization and specialists in the transformation of schools from Rote style classrooms to child-centered /child friendly learning environments. Our goal is to evolve the quality of education as opposed to the quantity of access, for example. Today, WCR drives perhaps the most innovative and sustainable model in African development assistance with a focus on Early Childhood Development and primary education.
Green Screen TV ’s theme song was written and performed by DeLawn Hardy and Hasani Ashbury, Green Screen high school students who were learning about environmental issues, peer education and community activism. EarthTeam sponsors the Green Screen to promote environmental education in the East Bay Area and the Motorola Corporation sponsors the Green Screen TV with an Innovation Generation grant to promote student creative use of technology.
